INTRODUCING ALL FOR EYES
WHY ME? WHAT NOW?
Over the past five years I have personally experienced low vision. Coping with my
own failing sight has led me on a global quest. I have visited low vision clinics, read
the latest books on eye conditions and eye care, spent hours surfing the Internet,
and researched vitamin and herbal eye supplements. My own experience has
taught me some simple facts that are the guiding principles of All For Eyes. In
business, unless you feel passionately about your idea, you will not succeed.
GUIDING PRINCIPLES
• People with low vision dread the clinical atmosphere of the physicians’
clinic. The battery of eye tests, while of course necessary, are a torture which
constantly reminds us that we do not have “normal” sight. This is often reinforced
by well-meaning nurses – “What, you mean you can’t see that? Try!” All For Eyes
offers a colourful, calming, comfortable atmosphere. Learn to enjoy the sight you
have left, rather than mourn the sight you have lost.
• Once we are beyond the physician’s healing capabilities, he will monitor our
physical conditions, but he can do little to help lift our despair and depression, or
improve the quality of our life. That is not his job. The sentence of low vision is
medically irreversible.
• Those of us with vision problems must therefore search for information about
our conditions, and take the initiative in improving our quality of life. We must all
become proactive patients.
• We are of course further hampered by our inability to search out the diverse
places to look for vision aides – if we could we wouldn’t need them! Friends and
relatives have trouble empathizing; and we have trouble explaining. A one-stop
retail shop for vision aides is thus a very useful focal point.
• Happily, I have discovered that there are many useful items for improving
quality of lifestyle. Binoculars to see signs at airports. Hand-held magnifiers to
read. Talking clocks and watches. Audio books to pop into the CD player.
Computer text enlargement software to surf the net.
• The good news is that almost everything is off-the-shelf, and relatively
inexpensive. That means we have to be prepared to experiment and settle on our
own unique combination of low vision/no vision aides, which are very task
specific. I have four pairs of glasses for various reading tasks, as well as three
different hand-held magnifiers.
• In sum, my own experiences have been distilled into the branding, ambience,
and customer service that we offer at All For Eyes. Please visit and see for
yourself!
